When I first got into this business and started visiting aggregate yards and ready-mix plants, I was shocked that every single one I visited had no process for reconciling their inventory. All the data was present — they had the stockpile in front of them, they had batch tickets or truck scale tickets, they were tracking what their belt scale measured and were aware that drift was a problem — but still every yard told me they just eyeball it. Thousands of dollars literally disappearing. I was absolutely floored when I found a study showing that in 2022, nearly 28% of ready-mix concrete volume was sold at a loss. Now, I don't know much about materials, rocks, or what it takes to stay competitive in the aggregate industry, but as a software developer by trade, I know data — and with my experience in fintech, I know every dollar counts.
